WATO plus User guide

WATO plus is a completely overhauled version of the popular What are the Odds? tool with several important improvements. You can read more about what is new in WATO plus in the recent sneak peek blog post.

This guide will be updated regularly as the tool develops and new questions are asked.

When you start, the tool will ask for

  1. The name and birth year of someone with an unknown parent

When you start a new tree, you'll be asked to enter the name of the person with a missing parent. This might be yourself, one of your parents, or even a more distant ancestor. You can also specify if the missing parent is the mother, father, or just either parent.

  2. The name of the person whose DNA matches you’re using

The tool will then ask you to confirm whose DNA matches you will be using and what the relationship of this DNA tester is to the person with the missing parent.

For example, if David is looking for the biological father of his mother Kathy, he would state that he will be using the DNA matches of Kathy's child, and then enter his own name in the field that appears when he selects Kathy's child.

  3. A family tree that connects DNA matches

Last but not least: before you use the tool, you need to have spent some time working on DNA matches to build a tree. You would normally do this by:

    • Grouping the matches
    • Deducing which group of inter-related matches could be relevant to the unknown parent
    • Doing the genealogical research to connect two or more of these matches in a family tree
