23andMe clustering

Last month I found out 23andMe had launched a beta clustering tool, DNA Relatives Clustering. This is available to paid 23andme+ members who have opted in. Initially, there was no documentation beyond a Reddit post, but the feature is clearly powerful, with the ability to customize cM thresholds and target specific matches. There is now an official help page on 23andMe clustering that seems useful and informative.

Some recent developments as of February 2026

1. There’s now an option to Cluster Relatives in Common alongside the regular View Relatives in Common button.

2. There’s a Download button that lets you download the cluster data in a simple CSV format for spreadsheet programs like Excel. You can find this at the bottom of the DNA Relatives Clustering page.

You can also import this into a DNA Painter matrix by copying the data and pasting it into a form field via the Load menu

I haven’t seen much other coverage about this tool, but I see that Jarrett Ross (the GeneaVlogger) also spotted it!

It’s early days (and I don’t have that many people tested there at this point) but it’s great to see 23andMe clustering available directly on their site. There’s also an on-site survey that I would urge anyone using this to complete, so that genealogists can provide feedback as to the features that would be most useful to them.
